What exactly are the 'flutes' or whatever they are in the M4 barrel? It's not straight. Just curious.

They're not flutes necessarily, it's the contour of the barrel that allows the mounting of a M203 grenade launcher to the M-4.

Or are you talking about a fluted barrel where material is taken away to reduce weight?

I believe the 203 answer was the one I was looking for. I'd heard the same thing from someone else,just wanted to make sure. SoI guess other than looking cool,there's no point in one unless you have the 203. Thanks.

Yeah pretty much, they are lighter than the HBAR's you'll find on some manufacturer's rifles so they are somewhat useful in that respect.  However for most of the shooters that have them they are for looks only..I really can't say much though because I have a M4 contour barrel myself.
