Hey guys, I'm doing my leg work now into assembling an AR from a stripped lower. I'm kind of surprised that there's not a sticky of the lower manufactures with prices and general opinions/reviews on them. What are some companies to look into for buying my lowers from? Right now I'm looking into getting 2, maybe 3 lowers (figure having an extra around wouldn't hurt), to turn into AR's eventually. I'd like to build at least 1 20in A2 and maybe another carbine down the line. I'm trying to keep everything fairly low cost, so that is a concern. Any input?? -Mike |
+1 The barrel and bolt carrier group are the "heart" of the rifle. Don't cut corners here. Most lowers are pretty close. As long as the lower is forged and from good company, you should be OK. |
You're not seeing the forest because the trees are in the way. Manufacturers? Go to the industry section. Prices? Go to the equipment exchange and/or click some of the sponser links and banner ads at the top of the page. Opinions and reviews? That's a big part of what the tech forums are for. Want somebody to spoon feed you everything because you're too lazy to look for it yourself? You're going to be very dissappointed. |

Hey Hop, cut the guy a little slack. I've used RRA, Superior, Bushmaster, Stag and Colt lowers to build with. I can't say any one of them is better than the other. If you stay with one of the above, you'll be OK. AS far as price goes, go over the EE and check them out. The prices offered by the vendors in EE are about as good as any. Hope this helps |

I have two Superior Arms lowers that I really like. I paid around $91 shipped from RBPrecision for the second one. The first one was a complete lower for $225 shipped from RBPrecision. I don't know about how good they are, but Essential Arms has a great price on stripped lowers. |
Hey I'm just saying it would POSSIBLY help out people who are considering building a low cost AR who are new to AR's or building, this is after all the build it yourself forum. if you want to jump on someones back go insult someones mama and start a bar fight somewhere. It's not like I asked you to give me a blow by blow bit of instructions as per how to build an AR15, I just asked about CHEAP lower receiver manufactures. Step off your high horse and realize that at one point in time you too were new to things once and had to ask for information. Just because you think the answer is easy and obvious doesn't mean that someone new to the hobby is going to know everything. and in response to your tirade manufacturers: there are more than are just up in the sponsor links and tabs I was asking about what other ones are out there that are ones to stay away from and ones to look at...I didn't know that the lowers were more or less all the same and not terribly important. Now I'm looking for decently priced because I'm in college and trying to support a hobby on top of my education. Prices: looking around, so I need to know what I'm spending to price out my build. I had gotten some prices over the EE but didn't know at the time that it didn't really matter what brand lower I get. Opinions and Reviews: need to know the different manufacturers to know what to search for now don't I Spoon feed: didn't ask for it. If I was looking for a spoon feed I'd be asking even dumber questions than you perceive this one to be. Besides there's a freaking how to on how to assemble everything thats stickied on the top of this forum....so I don't need your help with assembling anything, doesn't mean I might not have a question or two during the process to be sure that I don't screw anything up. Disappointing me.....What does disappoint me are people like you who jump on someone who posts a question 1 time here in the whole 2 weeks they've been on the forum. Like I mentioned before, you too were once a noobie at something and you've had to ask people questions. Maybe you were lucky and you were raised around rifles and your dad helped you learn you everything you know about shooting and rifles...I didn't have that luxury, then again I didn't really have a father around my whole life, so if yours was around count your blessings. |
If you think it's such a great idea then please feel free to compile a list of all known manufactures, all dealers for all of their lowers, the prices at all of those dealers, and keep the whole thing up to date. |

There is a list here someplace. There are only five or six actual manufacturers of lowers. There are dozens of companies slapping their name on these lowers. Being a an AR noob myself, I spent lots of time in the archives before settling on a Stag complete lower. not because of Stags reputation|(which is great), but because I got a really good price. From what I can see, a list of lower manufacturers and prices would be kinda pointless. From my detailed research, the average price of a good lower is around $110 give or take a few bucks. Brand really doesn't matter. stay away from castings and stick with Stag, RRA, Ammetec, Mega, Superior, Essential etc. and you'll be fine. FWIW. I learned the hard way that some folks just love crapping on noobs for general principal. I try to do as much researching as I can before asking a question and keep the question short and concise, otherwise the sharks will smell blood in the water and be all over you like white on rice.
