I've seen some buttstock manufactures make reference to their models needing "milspec buffer tubes." I assume there is a milspec and a commercial spec? Can anyone advise me the differences? |
Commercial spec carbine buffer tubes are about 0.025" larger in diameter. Some commercial carbine buffer tubes have a slanted back end, but they are not 5/8" longer as mentioned above. They are generally very close in length to a military spec tube. The 5/8" mentioned is the difference between an M16 or A1 stock and an A2 stock. A1 and A2 stocks use the same length buffer tube, but A2 stocks have a spacer and use a longer screw.

| Actually, you're right and I wasn't clear. One of my "Mil Spec" tubes looks just like any other 5 position mil spec tube, while the other has about 5/8 of material at the end and a slanted saw cut. That's what I was getting at. At any rate, my Magpul CTR won't collapse all the way on that tube but will on my true "Mil Spec" tube. The tube my RRA came with is the same as my longer tube aside from the dia. |
No, it's got the same length bore but it's got a bunch of extra material at the end. It came on my CMMG. |
