I built an AR a couple years ago and ordered the lower receiver through a local guy here in San Antonio with an FFL. I remember his fee was $25. Now his fee is $50. Is that the going rate for FFL transfer? Or should I be shoppong around? Any recommendations for the San Antonio area? Thanks. |
| I got lucky I guess. I had hung around a pawn shop and had purchased a few things from him. I also knew some of his friends. Anytime I have him order me something, he only charges me what they charged him. But yeah, $50 is a bit much. Tell the guy he charged you $25 before and thats what you'll pay him now. If he says no, tell him you'll find someplace else then. |
| Shop around. I always use the "little guys"; perhaps a pawn broker, or someone who does tranfers in his spare time. Check the gunbroker/gunsamerica FFL listings. I have used only two dealers in my life. The first charged $10 (he died). The guy I use now charged me $20 for the first transfer, but has only charged me $10 for subsequent ones. I have always made a point, however, of giving them at least $20. Take care of them, they will take care of you. |

You guys got it made. Look at what my local dealer charges! www.auctionarms.com/Help/FFLMemberDisplay.cfm?UserNum=7915231425

| My dealer (heh! I sound like a druggie) charges $20.00 for transfers with $10.00 for the background check. He really knows his class 3 stuff so to me it's well worth it. He is also always friendly. So many times when I would go into gun shops in Illinois (I live in Tn now) the dealer would be friendly as heck on day and mean spirited and moody the next. |

$50 that is steep! I would buy a kit to complete 80%lower. $120.00 lower cost me $12, anything they store does not regularly carry they call a "special order" and charge 10%. Fair if you are buying a lower, not so if it is an expensive rifle. They treat me very well, so I am a repeat customer. |
