I built an AR a couple years ago and ordered the lower receiver through a local guy here in San Antonio with an FFL.  I remember his fee was $25.  Now his fee is $50.  Is that the going rate for FFL transfer?  Or should I be shoppong around?  Any recommendations for the San Antonio area?

Thanks.

$50 is very high, $15 is a low. Go to www.auctionarms.com and use their FFL search button thingy. It should give you a list of FFL's with their prices.

I got lucky I guess. I had hung around a pawn shop and had purchased a few things from him. I also knew some of his friends. Anytime I have him order me something, he only charges me what they charged him. But yeah, $50 is a bit much. Tell the guy he charged you $25 before and thats what you'll pay him now. If he says no, tell him you'll find someplace else then.

Find another dealer.  I am spoiled, my dealer only charges $12.

Shop around.  I always use the "little guys"; perhaps a pawn broker, or someone who does tranfers in his spare time.  Check the gunbroker/gunsamerica FFL listings.  I have used only two dealers in my life.  The first charged $10 (he died).  The guy I use now charged me $20 for the first transfer, but has only charged me $10 for subsequent ones.  I have always made a point, however, of giving them at least $20. Take care of them, they will take care of you.

If you have a sportmans warehouse in the area, they only charge 15 bucks.

Thanks guys.  Glad I asked.  This guy does this stuff on the side, and I thought that fee was quite high.  Maybe he's just getting tired of doing it.  I'll check those places you mentioned.

Thanks.

If I buy through my dealer, he doesn't charge me anything.  If I just have him do the transfer it's $20 (I think).

my dealer used to charge me $50.00, then I became a repeat customer and he charged me $30 for two lowers...so that makes it $15.00 each...not bad...at times he gives it to me FREE....I probably had about 15 lower come through him.

$25 is an avg/fair going price imo; $50 is too much, less than $25 is good

I checked around yesterday in my area and was quoted 30 and 35.

Decided it would be cheaper to build one instead.

At my local gun shop, it cost me $35 for the FFL transfer off an Internet order I did.  I thought it was kind of steep, but I would rather pay them, than go to other dealers.  I want a good rapport with my gun guys. I would expect from 25-30 is the norm.

My dealer (heh! I sound like a druggie) charges $20.00 for transfers with $10.00 for the background check. He really knows his class 3 stuff so to me it's well worth it. He is also always friendly. So many times when I would go into gun shops in Illinois (I live in Tn now) the dealer would be friendly as heck on day and mean spirited and moody the next.

$5 for my guy to transfer a $100 lower.
....also $5 to transfer a $1800 rifle.  Go figure.

I would suggest shopping around anytime you plan on using a FFL.  I usually use GunBroker.com's FFL search and a few others.  I have yet to pay more than $10 (the last time was a week ago) so definitely shop around when it comes to FFLs.

FFL I went through recently charged $40 to transfer as many receivers at one time as I wanted.  Picked up 10 Stag receivers so it came to $4 per receiver.  I was happy.

$50 that is steep! I would buy a kit to complete 80%lower.

$120.00 lower cost me $12, anything they store does not regularly carry they call a "special order" and charge 10%. Fair if you are buying a lower, not so if it is an expensive rifle. They treat me very well, so I am a repeat customer.

Man, I'm spoiled; I handle the FFL for our club and we offer it free of charge to our members.  Around my area, other FFLs charge around the $25-$50 range, so you gotta shop around.
