I bought a Bolt Carreier on EE and when I got it I noticed, The bottom of the back of the bolt is milled off?? So now if you look at it from the rear it looks like an unside down C.  Does anyone know whay this would be?

I believe Colt started doing this so the carrier could not be converted to use in a full auto weapon. They used to sell a clamp on piece that would let the carrier function full auto.

so it looks like this?

it is the easiest(and cheapest) way to machine a semi auto carrier, no need for the full round in a normal rifle , and it clears the sear block in colt lowers

Ahhh, the sear block. Now that makes sense. I guess the conversion factor was just an added benefit.

Both are features of Colt Rifles that prevent you from converting it to FA.

Everyone above did a good job explaining why Colt did this, But remember it has ZERO effect on functioning in a semi auto, so do not shy away from one, they are excellent carriers.
