Question about my most recent re-barreling job... When I inserted the barrel into the upper receiver, I noticed a little play between the barrel index pin and the receiver notch.  Is this normal? I lined up the sights and torqued the bbl. nut down to 40lbs. and everything lines up fine.  I test fired today and it zeros perfectly.  Should I be worried about the slight play that was there?  Will my barrel eventually slightly rotate as I put more rounds through the gun -leading to a canted FSB?

It's very possible for the barrel to rotate later.  The play is not normal (at least spec-wise).

Yes.  And it is common.  Sometimes you get a nice tight fit... and sometimes there is a hint of play.  This is what happens with interchangeable parts.... If it bothers you... you can stake the opposite side with a center punch to fill the void and remove the play.  You can also use this method to remove any cant in the FSB.

Nope.

Nope.... only a REALLY hard drop with a rotational impact to the FSB... or a barrel nut loosening ever-so-slightly.... if it was installed at minimum torque specs.  If it took some beef to line up the gas tube port.... you have no worries.

Huh, you and I had opposite answers.

I'm just going off my experience.  I've only had one receiver with play, and the barrel rotated.  I'm sure FALARAK is right as far as the true answers.

That is certainly possible.... especially when the barrel nut is torqued to minimum specs when it lines up... or when using softer aluminum barrel nuts with some FF tubes... those seems to demonstrate the loosening effect much easier.
