I have never built a AR but only bought complete rifles. I am looking to buy a seperate receiver and barrel and bolt group used from the equipment exch. If I do that will I need to check the headspace or will it all go together and be ready to shoot? Thanks in advance!  Kirk

The concensus seems to be if all the components are new then everything should be fine.  You can assemble and go shooting.

The worst case would be a used barrel and a used bolt group.  Typically a bolt face and barrel extension wear together as the round count increases.  Separating these used parts and assembling them with different used parts may produce an out of tolerance condition.  In this condition, a head space check would be the prudent thing to do.

I don't have guages so I have never checked headspace. I only build with new components and have been lucky so far (I guess). This question comes up pretty regularly and the consensus is usually about a 50/50 split.
