How do they work?
Is there a special trick to installing them?

I have only one, I use it on a Colt A1 Barrel that I cut down to 15" (I Perm. Mounted an A1 F/H to make it legal), When I cut it down (Many Many years ago) I opened up the gas port a little too much, So I added the adjustable gas block so I could dial in the proper amount of gas for proper function.

There is an allen head set screw in the side that you dial in or out to adjust the gas flow. I don't remember who the Mfg. was, but I purchased it from Brownells.

There are 2 set screws located on the bottom of the unit that secure it on the barrel, No special trick to installation except I dimpled the barrel where the set screws contact it & Loctited the set screws in place to insure it does not come loose.

JP is the most common maker of adjustable gas blocks.

I am not aware of them ever making a 0.625" model though.
An A1 barrel would need a 0.625" gas block.
Are you sure your barrel is not an A2?
