A good cheap variable power scope until you figure out what you really want.

For varmints, I'd go with a medium-powered scope (like 3-9x or a fixed 4x or 6x) at first, if I were you.  A cheap Simmons/Tasco/BSA will run you about $40 at Wal-mart and the like (a lot less used), and rings cost about $8-16 at Wal-mart (with the "Weaver" brand being Chinese-made crap, IME that doesn't lock up tightly on the rail).  Get some good rings - you'll be proud you did.  I've bought 3 sets for the same scope in the past 6 months, ranging from the junk Weaver set to a better Simmons set to finally the Leupold ones that I got for less at Wal-mart (about $14, IIRC) and that turned out to be perfect.  You'll need a mount too if you have a carry handle, and those are about $12.  I have this one, and it's really stable and works well for me: www.m1surplus.com/ar_carry_handle_scope_mount.htm

I put my carbine together thinking I'd stay all Irons.  Ended up with an EOtech on there in no-time and I REALLY like it.  That said, the Carbine compliments my 24" varminter with a 6-24X40 Bushnell 4200.

From your list of intended uses, I'd say get a scope, or do what I did...

I built my first with an A3 flatop and detachable carry handle. This gave me the iron sights. I then bought a scope riser from Tapco and mounted a 3-12x50 scope on the riser. By just turning two screws, you can switch from irons to scope and back real quick.

That riser is about half price on eBay (that's where I got mine).  Search for "Weaver riser" and you'll find it.
