| hi guy's this will be my first semi auto ever, and now is the time to start my first ever build. i just got my lower from RRA unassembled not much yet but it's a start. |
| thank's guy's i'm sorry for the big picture i just started to learn how to download pics on web forums.hould |
| here is a new pic with some parts that came in hope you like.http://i103.photobucket.com/albums/m137/guimbo/Picture051.jpg |
| i found out that they sent me two different pins for the trigger and hammer. i talked to one of the guys at RRA and i gues the pins are supposed to have been the same but for what i can see from the ones i got one is larger in diameter then the other. any input on this? |
It depedns on "how much larger" There are three *major* different sizes of trigger/hammer pins: "Standard" : .154" "RRA match" : .155" "Colt bastard size" : .170" If you got a colt bastard pin - it wouldnt even start - and would be very visibly obvious that it was the wrong size. If you got a RRA match pin - those are just slightly oversized to be a press/tap fit, so they dont spin. You have to tap them into some receivers to get them going. |
|
also with the rra lowers.... be patient when mating the upper to the lower because it is going to be an extremely tight fit. don't force it. just lube them up good with some clp and work them back and forth until they fit. it's a PITA at first, but what you end up with is a nice tight fit between the upper and lower, which makes it worth it in the end |

casket77, back in the "bad ole days" 15 or 20 years ago, all aftermarket recievers, upper and lower, were cast aluminum and they all had to be hand fitted. Nowadays, even the cheapest recievers are forged aluminum and are exponentially (I just learned that word!) better than those old pieces of s#@%! Most modern name brand recievers go together like red beans and rice. These are the good ole days! Start with the pivot (front) pin. If it closes all the way, like it should, go to the TD(rear) pin. If it doesn't close all the way, you may have to relieve the bottom of the pivot pin hole of the upper reciever with a rattail file. If it closes all the way but the takedown pin won't go then you will have to use the rattail file on the rear pin hole of the upper reciever. Avoid modifying your lower reciever. It is the "gun", anything else is just a "part". Good luck on this build and your next, (there will be a next one!) P.S. I really dig the green furniture!!! |
no it's not that bad, but sometimes people spaz out about it. you'll probably run into this with any upper you attach to the lower. from what i've heard rra puts a thicker coating on their lowers. |
| again thank's alot for the information guys youv'e been really helpful. now i'm thinking what are your opinions on to which upper to use (brand)?. the type of shooting that i would like to do is from short to intermediate range for instance the range i go to only has from 50yds to 300yds. what barrel lenght and twist should i consider etc ? |
It is not a thicker coating - hard coat anodizing is hard coat anodizing. The reason *some* uppers dont fit on *some* RRA lowers (actually, CMT made lowers in general) is because CMT does not cut a relief in the rear coarners of the receiver, like you see on other models. This causes some Bushmaster and Colt upper receivers not to fit, because they are wider and longer in that area, and require mild filing/sanding to fit. The lack of this relief cut in the RRA receiver causes most uppers to fit a tad more snug, which is considered by *some* to be a benefit. I have built several RRA's and Stags that would barely fit even with CMT made upper receivers... but they were just tight and loosened up with use. I wouldnt worry about a problem until you have one. |
CMT (Stag/RRA) from Global Tactical
Twist? 1:7, so you can shoot any ammo. After that... 1:8. After that, 1:9. Length? If you dont have a specific reason to get a rifle, then always go carbine. 16" is a good length. I see you already have an A2 stock.... do you know speficially how you plan to use this weapon? That will determine your choices more than anything. Providing the distance of 50-300 doesnt really mean squat. Do you plan on using it for 3-gun? Urban combat training? Plinker? Benchrest/target/varmint shooting? |
|
If you want to be able to shoot heavy bullets, 75gr plus, then yes. Otherwise, it aint all that critical. I do like options, however... and 1:7 and 1:8 will shoot just about anything out there.
Then you might consider if you just want to plink with cheap ammo - or whether you will get into shooting for small groups.... which means you will need better quality ($$$) ammo and a better barrel... such as a stainless match barrel, typically in 1:8.
It typically does. However, more velocity doesnt always mean your rifle will shoot better at longer distances. A quality 16" barrel will outshoot a rack grade 20" barrel at 500yds, easily. Length has more to do with maintaining desired velocity for hunting, or to have the longest fragmentation threshold possible on human targets. Probably not your biggest concern.
Not at all! Before buying an upper, I do suggest you read up, and consider the type of shooting you want to do.... the kind of ammo you want to use, and the accuracy you expect, and that will help you make an informed decision. |
| thank's falarak for the for the great info.now if i were to put together my own upper? for instance like buying a assembled upper and picking a barrel that would best suit my shooting need's would there be any issues to worry about or am i just better off just buying one complete? what are the advantages on either one? thank's again. |
| well i finally got the pin and got it together.http://i103.photobucket.com/albums/m137/guimbo/Picture052.jpg |
| well i do have to say that so far the trigger is really heavy fells like a 12lbs trigger pull but i guess i'll have to get used to it.and one other thing i noticed that if you kind of shake the lower set up i can hear the spring shake inside the stock is this normal?thank's. |
| well i finally got it all together here it is.http://i103.photobucket.com/albums/m137/guimbo/Picture083.jpg |
