Can anyone offer any insight on replacing the barrel extension. Are there any pins or welds to be concerned with?

When properly clamped, will the extension just unscrew?

I see that Brownells has barrel extension wrenches and replacement barrel extensions.

...never mind.  From what I've hear, It's a real pain.

I think it's discussed in the book that the owner of "Accuracy Speaks" wrote.  Not an easy task because you have to get it to line up with the existing gas hole.  IIRC it's not a home job by any means unless you've got a lathe and some experience.

The extension is installed on the barrel before all the other operations, drilling gas port, index pin, finish reaming of the chamber, front sight base mounting.

Chances of you just screwing on a new one and getting it to line up properly is nil and none.

Consider the barrel extension non replaceable.  The cost of machinist's time is more than the cost of a new barrel.
