Never tried before.  How difficult is it, and are there any tips to make things easier? Thanks

Mike

It's not difficult.  The best tip I can give you is read the link above.  At least twice.

Yup. Read the links. Lay all your parts out, organize and identify them. It's really a piece of cake.

Don't forget the disconnector spring.  Or the buffer retainer pin and spring.  h.gif

It is really easy if you study the tutorial pinned at the top.  I used a Leatherman, a small pair of vice grips with black tape on the jaws, some allen wrenches and a phillips screwdriver to put mine together.

Before you try to install the safety, cock the hammer !!!  Avoid a DOH.

I can't tell by reading if this is a warning or a vote of confidence.   I guess I should try one and see how it goes.  I guess if I mess it up,  I can keep buying LPK's till I get it right.   Thanks for the help.

That was a big help. I also wore safety glasses because my cousin said he had a spring shoot across the room. It sure was fun and felt good to do it myself.

Reposted from a thread I did a few weeks ago.

The front take down pin and the bolt catch can be two of the most difficult assemblies when building up a lower. After building quite a few over the years, here is how I do it.

This build used a GTS Lower and a Stag LPK. I find the coil pins in the Stag kits MUCH easier to work with then the regular roll pins found in other kits.

Installing front take down:
I use a 1/4 drill bit to support the detent.

Then just use the take down pin to push the detent into the receiver and then push the pin into the receiver. When doing this, I use my left hand to hold the lower and bit steady and then use my right hand to put the pin in.

Bolt catch:

I start by wrapping the receiver with electical tape. I then take a 6" file and put a small chamfer on one end. This allows the pin to start.

Then I tap the pin in to the receiver just before it starts into the bolt catch channel. I use a 1/8" roll pin punch for this.

Next I install the bolt catch spring and plunger and push the catch into place. Here you could use a 3rd hand but I hold the catch and punch in place with my left and run the hammer with my right. As you tap you may have to wiggle the catch to get the hole lined up with the pin.

I use the 1/8" roll pin punch up to about a 1/16" away from the bolt catch lug on the receiver. Then I use a plastic punch to drive it flush and then a 1/16" punch to counter sink the pin a bit.

Twins.

A timely thread. I've got a Tom Sawyer prototype lower on the way that'll be my first LPK build.
