Is there any trick to getting the spring and detent into the lower?  I am talking about the one that the front pivot pin goes over. I seem to try and hold it down with my thumbnail and then try to get the pivot pin in . No luck though

You could try building one of these install tools.

I use needle nose pliers to grip the detent with one hand, then use the other to hold the pivot pin.  Push the detent into the hole using the side of the pivot pin, keeping the detent straight using the pliers.  Keep pressure on the detent and slide the pin in.

Use some eye protection and do it in a small confined space so it's easy to find the detent when it goes flying the first couple of attempts.

i use an extra front pivot pin inserted from the opposite/left side to hold the spring and detent in place.  once set you just push your new pivot pin.  works great for me.  of course you need an extra front pivot pin on hand... or a spare lpk

If you have a bamboo chopstick or dowel, or punch of similar diameter to the pivot pin, take the spring and detent and insert them in  the hole.  Slide the implement of choice up to the detent.  Push the detent down with a small punch or something and slide the implement of choice through.
then use the pivot pin to push out the implement of choice.  It should go in and work the first time.
I have built one AR and I used the chopstick and got it the first try.  Better than buying a tool you dont need.  Good luck.
