I'm gonna try it... would like some tips if anybody can offer some. MIG or Oxy-Acc (poor man's TIG) Once pin is below finish surface, can it just be welded and then ground/filed to contour of flash hider. I'm going to use the Vortex that is pre-drilled for the pins anybody done one of these yet? What about heat? Anything else I should know before I crank up the welding gear? Thanks all! |

Sounds like you got it planned well. I have drilled and tapped the FS for a 8-32 set screw and then drilled a divot into the barrel, tightened down the set screw and then welded over the top. Grind/file and cold blue. I used a Miller 250X MIG machine, I set it up for 3/16" materail. I also used a piece of scrap with some holes drilled in it to practice. A auto darkening helmet comes in handy too. I put the ground clamp on the FS body and it got a little arc damage but not too bad. I also wrapped the rest of the upper up in a t-shirt to protect it from sparks. Turned out ok.  |
Setting up some scrap to get warmed up!! Thanks for mentioning the arc on FSB, I'll find a place that's not visible for ground clamp. Also going to play with silver solder and looking for the hi-temp paste. From what I've read, the paste is perfect... smear on threads, install FH and heat! Wipe off any flow and let it cool. Will be interesting what direct flame does to Vortex finish. Thanks for the reply/tips. Bill
