Any particular ones that you folks would recommend?  I was gathering up all the pieces parts I have accumulated for an AR build, and one of the things that has surfaced since I moved recently was a DPMS exteneded bolt release... basically an additional lever that fit in between the ears along w/ a modified (thinner) stock release part.  I've seen one around on the Net that looks like it basically bolts or clips onto the stock unit somehow.  I thought, 'way back when' that there were some around that projected thru the front of the trigger guard so a shooter didn't have to stick  their finger thru the trigger guard like these seem to...  any suggestions or leads?

TIA,

That might be a tough one; I'm not sure they caught on, so it may be a hard part to come across. I'd check with www.brownells.com and www.e-gunparts.com. The latter is the company formerly known as Numrich Arms. They have a metric buttload of parts for all kinds of weapons.

I'm not sure how you train, or what you are doing with your setup, but there are a few different options available.

If I were doing a bolt catch mod, I would make sure it was something that I could continue to hit with the palm of my hand.  Thats how I've always trainined, and I wouldn't want to make any changes.  However, if you didn't train that way, or were one of those people who thought using their thumb was an acceptable method, there are a few other styles that are mounted and used differently.

IMHO,  bolting on items that run the length or width start to remove the combat aspects of the weapon, but highpower, 3 gun, and other sports aren't looking at it from that point of view.  I think you will find a much better selection of 3 gun items on some of the 3 gun websites than you will find here.

None of the above is meant to badmouth anyone, their weapon or shooting style, its simply a reflection that there are different uses for the AR15, and different ways to set them up according to what the shooter wishes to do.

Feral,

Thanks for the link to the DCTech lever... doesn't stick thru the trigger guard like I'm looking for, but it does look considerably more robust than this older style DPMS that I have on hand.

Stickman,

This particular gun isn't a SHTF/EOTW gun... more like medium/long range precision rig.  It's getting my take-off WOA 1-7" Service Rifle barrel (which spins 90gr SMK's fairly well) and a variety of other furniture such that it's primary 'mission' is going to be 1) varmints, 2) F/TR class, 3) the occasional 'precision' or 'practical' rifle match around here, and 4) plinking.  No great need to be able to slap and go.  For the F-Class aspect, where it must be single loaded, every shot, I figured it'd be better to go w/ something that doesn't require the shooter to stick their finger thru the trigger guard before they are completely dead-on aiming at the target (HP ranges around this neck of the woods are kind of touchy about that...), since this may be my 'loaner' gun for new  shooters... mild recoil, not too difficult to operate.  I've got my *dedicated* F/Open rigs for my own more serious F-Class competitive aspirations.  As you said, more that one way to set these guns up!

Thanks,

nuk

Most extended releases have a hard attachment to the bolt release.  That can cause function problems since that adds weight to the moving parts, slowing them down.  This is particularly true for those that extend through the trigger guard.  The DCTechs release is mounted on a extended roll pin and isn't attached to the bolt catch, so function isn't impaired.  I've used one for three years now with no problems.  I highly recommend it.

I had tried a Medesha through-the-guard release, but couldn't get it to work.  Another possibility I haven't explored cuts a slot in the right side of the lower receiver and adds an extension to the catch that sticks out where it's esy to access.  That also adds weight to the catch, but much less than the usual extended release.

Not sure if it's what you're looking for - I just plink and it works for me.  Quick on/off with a set screw. From RBPrecsion

Happy Shooting!

How about this unit
As you can see, it's got the two pads.
