Im building my first upper an m4gery. I have a chrome bore and chamber, does a chrome bolt make any real difference in performance?

I'm no expert but have a chrome BCA but to my knowledge, there is no performance advantage to a chrome BCA. I think it's easier to clean and supposedly last longer than a non-chrome, that is if it's properly built and the chrome plating doesn't chip off.

I wouldn't go with chrome BC unless you were going to be around salt water, like on a boat.  That said I do have one in my DCM rifle but it's more for look than anything else.

Let's not confuse things.

A milspect bolt carrier has hard chrome lining inside where the bolt fits.  Milspec bolts and mating receiver extensions are not chromed.

Some folks (Young's Mfg???) sell chromed bolt carrier assemblies for some reason.  These cause more wear and tear in the upper receiver and thus military abandoned them in the late 1960s.  We now know that chromed bolt carriers help strip off the thin protective layer of dried lube (CLP) in upper receiver that accumulates over time.

Stick with a quality bolt/carrier from a quality vendor.  It's also worth paying $5ish bucks extra to get a bolt thats' "MPI" (magnetic particle inspected) just like a quality milspec barrel.
