Hello....

Complete noob here.  Been doing AKs and others for years.  I thought I would start dabbling in ARs.  Anyhow...I have a few receivers nom (STAG) and would like to start building complete rifles from the ground up....including the upper.  So I am looking to get an upper receiver action block and I see the one that Bushmaster sells and then the one on Brownell's.  The Bushmaster looks a bit more solid, but I like that the Brownell's one has the "plug" for inside the upper....does the Bushmaster come with this, or can you get it separately or is it not needed?  Which should I get?

Thanks!

I have the Bushmaster model and like it fine!

My buddy swears by the DPMS pictured above...

The Bushmaster does not come with the insert.

how can this one be anywhere near as good as the Peace River w/insert?  if you look on the forums in the last few days I think comeone cracked an upper using the DPMS block.   I think I have read either on the DPMS site or on this site that the DPMS block is not designed for barrel removal.

I've done plenty of barrels with mine.  It feels sturdy.   They told me it's exactly what their armorers use.

lol I would tell you thats what my guys use also if I was selling it!  Its prolly an apple orange debate,  but the peace rive covers sooo much more area on the upper,  just seems like a better deal to support most of the upper,  where the DPMS just is held down by pins.  seems like maybe some stretching might go on.

The pins dont provide much support.  It's all done from the tight fit to the inside of the receiver

The DPMS unit is not for barrel work and that's what gets a lot of people in trouble.  There is nothing supporting the upper against the torque applied to the barrel nut, but that doesn't stop people from using it that way. Gas tubes, flash hiders, scopes and rings, whatever else, but not barrels.

The Brownells/Peace River unit is what you should use to install barrels, it completely encapsulates and allows the vice jaws to support the upper during barrel installation.  The DPMS has nothing but the delrin to support against the twisting.

Thanks guys for all the responses!  I'm placing my order with Brownell's today!

Ok....I received my Peace River/Brownell's action block set (the upper block and the lower block).  I haven't had a chance to try the upper yet, but the lower wouldn't fit in any of my lowers (Stags and Bushmasters).  WTF?  This should just slide in like a mag right?!?  It is too fat and would have to be pounded in with a hammer.  And I fear removal...I called Brownell's and they are sending me another one.  Am I doing something wrong or missing something?TIA

Ok...I called Brownell's about the lower block being too tight to fit in any of my mag wells.  They said no problem and sent me another one.  Same thing.  The damn thing is too frickin wide.  Did everyone else have this problem?  I know I could just shave it down until it fits, but it pisses me off to buy something that is made right for what it is intended to do.  Maybe they had a bad batch I don't know but if this is the norm they need to change their frickin' mold to be smaller and make the insert to the correct dimensions.

Ok...rant off.

Did anyone else experience this with the Peace River/Brownell's Lower Action Vise Block?

That's what I use too. I've applied LOTS of torque with no problems.  I like it because it doesn't mark up the upper like the peace river block. I also have a peace river block. I also use the DPMS block for LaRue tube installs.

Edit to add, if you break an upper using the DPMS block, you are applying too much torque.
