Such designs can have a recoil spring/buffer in the upper receiver (above the bolt). Oly Arms & ZM weapons (YHM) are the two designs I can think of off the top of my head. The folding stocks would also work for a .22LR conversion because those do not utilize the buffer. I'm in the process of adapting a $40 AK folder to my DPMS .22.

The aforementioned designs also have shorter bolt carriers, because the carrier extends into the buffer tube/lower receiver extension when it moves to the rear.
ACE sells a side folder kit for the AR, but notes that it will only work with .22 conversions and short carrier designs like OA's. |
