The final piece to my build (Samson 9.0) will be here for x-mas. I had planned on having Denny install the barrel, FH, gas tube, and Samson, but I don't see why I can't go ahead and have him knock the barrel out leaving the Samson to me. It doesn't require an action block or any special tools does it? Isn't it 2-piece thus not requiring the barrel or FSB to be removed? My Sabre middy has a triangular handguard cap. Will this need to come off? If so, does the FSB need to be removed to accomplish this or can it be cut off? Does it need to be replaced with a circular one or nothing at all? Thanks for the help guys!!! I hope Denny can even squeeze me in before x-mas. I had planned on some New Year's fun.

The Samson rail is just a drop in bolt on install job. If there is a delta ring and spring, those have to be cut or dremeled and removed. You could keep the handguard cap (usually a triangular for middy) or it's up to you if you want to take it off which requires that the FSB be removed then just slide the cap forward to remove it. If somebody else is going to assemble it for you, you could request that the handguard cap is not re-installed. The handguard cap could be cut but it's not an easy job, there is a high risk of scratching your FSB and/or barrel. Some are stating that removing the handguard cap helps a little in cooling the barrel, but who knows how much is the gain. Good luck on your project. |
| Doesn't the lower corners of the HG cap hang out past the rails creating a potentially sharp edge? If I don't have to remove the cap I might just order a Smith armorer's tool and do the barrel / FH myself. If I do this w/o a vice block, is there risk of torquing the receiver or anything or is it just a convenience thing? |
