I just received a DPMS 24 inch SS bull barrel from Midway.  I was excited to get it home and try it out on a new build.  I set the barrel in the upper and grabbed my new Hogue free float forend tube.  Much to my surprise it wouldn't fit.  I grabbed a barrel nut I had and it wouldn't fit either.

The barrel measures 1.052 under the forend.
Hogue barrel 1.011.
Barrel nut 1.020.

Midway and DPMS don't list the dimensions on their sites.  Brownells notes that DPMS bull barrels are .960 under the forarm.

I hate to send shit back.

Any reason I couldn't take a barrel nut, chuck it up and remove what I need off the inside so it will fit over the barrel?  I don't need that much.

Anyone have any problems with DPMS barrels before?

I've never had any issues with their parts.

Thanks

Sounds like you have a super bull barrel.  DPMS sells two types of bull barrels, one is the standard bull,  and one is the super bull.  I think I remember there website stating that standard barrel nuts and Hogue free floats don't fit there super bulls.  They offer different size free floates that will fit, but if you have to have the Hogue,  you might want to return the barrel and order the standard bull barrel.

I  looked at their site and only see one 24 inch bull barrel.  No reference to a "Super Bull".  I can't even find any forearms that note they will fit on a "Super Bull" barrel.

If they make a barrel that big their must be a barrel nut that will fit over it and be safe.

I think I'll be OK to take the Hogue tube and hone the ID to fit.

Since it's .032 smaller than the barrel I'll make a .017 cut and have .002 ball room.

I would think it would be just fine... but you are taking 40 thousandths off.  Thats .020 per side....

As long as there is still enough meat, that should be just fine.  The barrel is held in place against the receiver by the barrel extension shoulder, so it does no matter the ID of the nut - just there there is enough meat holding the shoulder into the upper receiver.
