I'm real new at this AR thing so bear with me.  If I get a diffrent upper for my AR will the same bc work?  am I better off buying a whole upper/bc group?

Thanks!

It should work, but it is always wise to check it.  It only takes a few minutes.

what is "headspace" and how is it checked and/or adjusted??  if i build an upper with new barrel, bc etc. do i need to check it?

thanks

checking headspacing is suggested on any bolt/barrel combo just to make sure everything is good to go.

headspacing cannot be adjusted or changed easily, probably not.

you use headspace gauges to check headspace

new barrels and bolts usually work good together but no ones perfect so there is that chance to get an out of spec part.

so headspace is the fitment between the bolt and barrel at lockup?  if so, would it be desirable to get the upper, bc group and barrel from same manufacturer?

thanks

i apologize for my ignorance but iam new to the building game.

it would not matter much cause small parts are usually sourced out and bolts are made and then thrown in with the upper/barrel as long as the parts are from a known good manufactor it shouldnt be much to worry about but even good manufactures let out bad parts once in awhile.

It does not really matter.  If you ordered bolts from 10 differeent suppliers, I would bet there were only two actual manufacturers of the whole bunch.

The bolt carrier and upper receiver have NO effect on headspace.   They are not involved in any way.

Only the bolt and barrel affect headspace.  These are made to fine tolerances, and should headspace unless one or the other, or both are extremely worn.

2 dimensions on the bolt, 2 on the barrel extension and at least 2 in the barrel.

Mated new parts should stay together IMO, while it might be okay, I believe that parts that wear together, should stay together ....

Folks that hang on to an old b/bc when selling their uppers haven't a clue of how the parts work in conjunction with each other.

I never give their uppers a second look on the EE.
