First, I apologize if I am posting this in the wrong board. My question is, what is the shortest barrel I can building an AR with and stay leagal with a telescoping buttstock in the state of Michigan? Thank your for your time.

I'm from Michigan too, the shortest legal here is 16".  Keep in mind you can purchase a 14.5" and permanently install a Phantom or Vortex (like I did) to make it legal.

anything under 28 needs to be registered as a pistol.  2 inches more than federal limit.  I don't think you can make an AR short enough to be under 28 and still meet the federal 16" barrel rule.

anyone ever register an AR pistol after building up a stripped receiver.

If overall length (with stock folded) is under 30" but over 26", than it has to be registered as a handgun.

Anything with an overall length (with stock folded) under 26" is considered an SBR which is illegal in Michigan.
