Does anyone know where I can get a chromed bolt carrier?  So far the only one I can find is made by Les Baer, and it’s kind of expensive.  Am I just not looking hard enough? hinking.gif

Brownell's sells the Les Baer for less, if you know how to get the double-secret price.

I've got a chrome B/BC from Del-ton, great function so far and great finish....Makes cleaning so much easier, the carbon shows!  I'll not buy another "black" B/BC.

What happend to them, did they break, or did the chrome start chipping off?

Would stainless be a better way to go?  I found out that JP makes one, but it costs big $$$.

How did they "not last" flaking, metal fatigue....help is out here!  If you just flame a product without examples or suggestions, that isn't progress.......its whining

broken extractor pawls, lugs breaking off usually the thinner areas would break off.

had one crack at the extractor pin on the bolt itself.

maybe i just got some bad ones and there are some good ones out there but im not gonna try again.

Over the last couple of years I've seen a few posts about chromed bolts (not the carriers) breaking or cracking because of being more brittle than the standard ones. In spite of that I bought one for my current unfinished project (need more $$$), but I will probably buy a standard bolt when it's done.

I think a chromed BC is overkill. Arent all uppers just hard anodized on the inside where the BC works back and forth? To me it would be like putting hardened steel pistons in an aluminum block with aluminum bores. Not quite that extreme as the anodizing is hard but I dont think its as hard as chrome. I think you'll just wear out the inside of your upper quicker.

I have a Smit Ent Hard Chrome Bolt (not carrier) and it has around 8K ronds on it and it is fine.

It is Magna Particle inspected and Proof marked.  Not all chrome bolts are equal.

How many guys have actually seen any type of failures with the chromed bolts and/or carriers?  Or maybe the guys that are building and selling the gear could give us some insight on this subject.  Are they more brittle? Do they break?  I'm interested in getting one, but if it isn't going to be 100% reliable then I don't want to get in a jam with it.

Then get one form smith enterprises or Les Baer.

It seems most of the broken chrome bolts can be traced to DPMS.

I know of 4 10" DPMS/CMMG uppers with chromed bolts and carriers that went through approximatly 3000-4000 rounds each in Iraq last year with no problems.
