I would like to build an AR rifle in .308 caliber.  I would like to do it fairly cheap but I don't want to build something generic.  I should have about $1000 dollars to work with and I would like to build something close to an armalite ar10-a2 carbine with a 6 position stock.  It would be nice if I could use FAL mags instead of the more expensive m14 mags.  This would be my first build and I would be willing to build from the ground up.   I don't know the first place to start and I could really use some advice on what to do or which sites to visit for parts and such.   Thanks a bunch.

I think the Bushmaster Bar10 uses the FAL or G3 mags, I forget.

I haven't seen an Armalite 10 that uses anything but Copy cat m14 mags.

Check over in the EE, there is usually one or two A2 uppers (both carbine and rifle length) for sale at a given time.

Tag to see what ideas pop up.

1600 is worth a.....

I looked into building one of these for a friend of mine.  He wanted something with a little more pop to go for deer with (can't use .223 in KS).

I found Armalite and in turn Eagle Arms had the MOST available parts to put your own together.  However, I quit looking for parts when I realized it was REALLY hard to save any money when putting one together from scratch as opposed to buying a built one.  The parts are not as readily (cheaply) available, it's like every part is "specialty" and so you really pay for it.

Let me put it this way.  Unless you find some awesome deals on used stuff, you are going to need EVERY penny of the $1000.

Look on Eagle Arms and Armalite, perhaps things have changed, but if not, I would highly suggest scouring for either A.) for used parts B.) a used AR-10 or BAR-10 and work from there (swap stocks, barrels etc.).

Don't mean to be a downer, but I really wanted to do the same thing.

You have to remember that there are three ways to go.

DPMS and Stoner use stoner mags.

Bushmaster uses FAL mags,

Armalite/Eagle uses modified M-14 mags.

Before you start looking at uppers, decide on the lower first, then buy parts for that system.

never really thought about building one until i came across an armalite barrel and LPK on gunbroker for $150 thinking what the heck, ill build one. well after the fact i looked into what it takes to build one, the parts are not easy to find and are expensive!  i did find out that the barrel alone sells for 350 alone from armalite.  i might have to scratch the idea and sell the shit or just collect parts from EE for the next 10 years until i have everything.  its quite the predicament.

Considering the amount of jack you saved already, you really should be able to come out ahead on an AR10 deal.  My point was, I was starting with nothing, and finding VERY little in the used market.  So for me to build one completely of new parts (including a NEW barrel for the oh-so-new price you mentioned), was not saving me anything, I would really just break even.  However, you've already saved 250-300 dollars... I'd go ahead, buy the rest new if you have to.

Just my $.02.

If you want something cheap that uses FAl mags you could always have a really nice Fal built on a cheap Imbel reciever for around 800 to 1000 bucks, theres all kinds of options for thse,I was thinking about an AR10 because I wanted something with a little more punch than a 223,but I'm still waiting to see if we will have a lot of 6.8 ammo available anytime soon first,to me 6.8 is a good happy medium between the two and I wouldnt have to buy a new lower
