Can anyone recommend a cheap sandblaster I can use to refinish my parts?

Go to Harbour freight. They usually have smaller inexpensive blasters. Just meassure the longest part you want to blast and make sure it will fit in the cabnet. If you only have 1 or2 long or odd shaped peices you can pull the blasting gun out of the cabnet  and blast it outside. just get good face and respiratory protection and ducttape everywhere you dont want to get sand in your clothes.

Do they all require compressors? or are there any self contained units?

There's this guy named Kissel that has some blasting tanks for sale for less than $100.  Apparently he put some kind of gun on it and he blows the hair of his dog from time to time.

To test them out I guess he was jaggin' at his dog with a stick to piss him off... one hit with the blasting tanks and the dog submits.

I do not know of any that do not require an air compressor.

It wasn't my idea.

Be sure to wear a filter mask when blasting out side where the sand gets airborne.  The sand blast sand can cause Silicosis if you breath the stuff long enough.

If you are using an enclosure, then there are no worries.

When I was in Home Depot they had one made by Husky for about $13. Probably would last long if you used it comercially but for a DIY project it sould be fine.

Hint: DONT use sand or glass beads to blast your parts for a refinish. Go a get some 120 grit Alum oxide and use that for your blast media. Trust me on this its more expiensive but it is worth it.

It seems like all of the require fairly large compressors (6CFM and up)... does anyone know of self contained packages?

I have bought and sold sand/soda/glass blasters, pots, cabinets, and compressors.  I have never seen a self contained unit.  I have seen packages of compressor, starter, filter, pot, and cabinet.   And you dont want to know what that costs.

If you are just blasting a few guns, you can get a small cabinet and a good six hp compressor should have the specs necessary to do one or two guns at a time.  If you dont waste air and material you can probably get a decent small unit for about $500 from Harbor Freight or go to a local tool supplier and find used industrial equipment.  There are some bargains out there.
