Im interested in putting a post ban muzzle break on my ar but my dealer says it will eventually fly downrange like a rifle grenade. Is this true even if you use loctite and tighten the set screws really tight etc... Should I even bother with it? My barrel isnt threaded and im not willing to pay $150 to have that done just to reduce recoil on an ar-15

Probably.  I’ve certainly seen them blown downrange.

Keep in mind a muzzle brake reduces recoil by redirecting gases coming out of the muzzle.  These gases tend to really shove the brake forward.

Granted, you might be able to drill shallow holes in your barrel for the setscrews to screw into.  Seems like that might do it.

Also note that unless you’ve already tried one and know what’s involved, you may be very unpleasantly surprised at how much louder a muzzle brake makes your AR.  (And it’s not like AR’s kick that hard anyway.)

I believe ADCO will thread your barrel for $65.  They’re a site sponsor and can be found in the Industry forum.  That’s the way I’d go, though I’d just mount a standard GI compensator myself (which is legal in my state, don’t know about yours).

Good luck!

is so much louder that its uncomfortable to shoot even with earplugs? mainly I want one for looks a little more than i want it for function, my non threaded post ban heavy barrel just looks plain naked to me

Then get a flash suppressor instead of a muzzle break

Id rather have a louder slightly less recoiling gun than a less visible one, i never shoot in the dark.

I'd rather have a Naked Barrel then one of those pain in the ears muzzle brakes

now would a flash hider eventually fly downrange if not welded to the barrel?

It is for me!

Granted, if you go with a set-screw type, it’d be easy enough to remove if you don’t like it.

A compensator can also be blown off if not securely attached.

Sad to say, if you want to do this right IMHO you’re just going to have to get your muzzle threaded.

I have a Colt with a factory comp on it. It does make the gun a good bit louder, but if you are wearing good hearing protection they arent that bad. On the other hand if you shoot alot of times without or with the plugs kinda stuck in your ears so you don't have to yell, a comp is a BAD idea you will damage your hearing permanantly.

Although an AR has little recoil, if you are gonna shoot several hundred rounds at a sitting you will notice the difference. If you don't shoot gobs of ammo at one time, leave it naked, or go with a FH.

my $ .02  after owning guns with comps with FH and naked.

if i were to machine a muzzle break or flashhider what would be the basic dimensions?

what if i used silver solder on the barrel before putting on the brake then heating it all up till it melts hopefully fixing it in place

No, because it would be threaded onto the barrel.
