I've tried about ten different ways to get this stinking front pivot detent in, and it's driving me nuts! Is there an easy way to do this?

I'm using a pair of needle nose pliers to hold the detent pin, then using the pivot pin itself to shove it in the hole.

I thought you were having a hard time getting it apart.....  M4Madness gives an easy way.

Sorry about that.

Try using a thin knife blade to hold the detent and spring inside the hole in the receiver, and slide the pivot pin into place.

Thanks M4Madness, I'll try that tomorrow.

a little bit of foul language and an extra set of hands work great too.

It is tricky until you find a technic that works for you. I use my thumb nail to push the spring all the way in and slide the pin in over it.

Yep.  That and a thin blade knife/razor blade makes easy work.  Honestly I hardly ever have much trouble.  Just the occasional "launch"

It would probably be easyer without the "launch".

The dentent pin launch is the right of passage for any AR builder.

This leads to assembling the lower in the bath tube with the curtains closed,

Followed by the big clear bag trick,

Then to that point that you just make the tool (and having a shit load of extra pins for when you do launch one).

Make a tool? Do tell.

I draped a few towels over stuff in the kitchen (better lighting). It paid off a few times.

Instead of making a tool, you can use an allen wrench and push it in from the other side....

I wrote up a thread and put some pictures in it awhile back, take a look and see if it helps any....

Finally got the little bastard when I got home from work. Using an allen wrench, ziplock bag, and razor blade, I got it.

Thanks for the suggestions everyone.

I did have one pin launch earlier before I set up the towels. It went out of the hole, off a coffee mug, hit the light over the kitchen sink, and down into the electric skillet. *swoosh*

So, now I have to wait a week to finish building, because the parts kit was missing a spring, and none of the gun stores around here carry spare parts .

if your knives and razors end up being too thick at any given point, use tinfoil...

oh, no wait, that's for cutting heroin...

you can use whichever blade from a spark plug gapping tool that is thin enough but still strong enough...
