I need a vice for the workbench so I can start doing barrel changes and such. I've been told I need at least a six inch vice for such things. But knowing that all the experts at this hang out here, I thought I'd ask you.

So what should I look for in a vice?

My experience has always been get the biggest vice you can either afford or have room for.  You will never regret that.

Edited:  A six inch is probably adequate for AR work, though.

It's "vise", not "vice".

Mongo, the "biggest vice" I can imagine would involve a couple of midgets, some moly grease, a goat, and telestock wrench.

To answer the question, I use a 4 1/2" heavy-duty vise that I bought at Lowe's for $40.

Monkey see - monkey do.

Your imagination is more "open" than mine is, BTW.

Yea but I wanted it to rhyme. Kinda like a Madison Avenue mis-spelling on purpose ad campaign.....

Nice
Vice
Rice
Advice
Lice
Police

....or something like that.

I just got a new Columbian vise, in 5". It was fairly  inexpensive, has a cool silver vien finish, and it's quality rivals much higher priced units. I can highly recommend this brand. Mine was a gift from my Father, but I think Lowes carries them.  EDIT: Just looked at Lowes.com only saw the
4 1/2 model...for only 19.99 might have to get one. They used to have larger sizes. The 5 or 6"
model with reg. and pipe jaws is around $100 I think.

I got a great 5" from Home Depot (Lowes has the same one) for $50.  It is more than big enough for AR work.  "Workforce 5" The head also rotates on a horizontal axis.

I bought the most basic model Home Depot had.  This is after breaking (yes, the metal on the base actually cracked) the most basic model Harbor Freight had.

I think this was the one I got

I broke that exact vise. Mine was a birthday present and was bought at Home Depot. So no money lost. It breaks at the threaded rod. I put a cheater bar on the handle because the barrel was slipping. But I did finish the project. Sometime I don't know my own strength. My new vise will be a Wilton.

Mine looks like that but it's a 6" vise. Works great.
