Say I wanted to build myself an AR.  Something along the lines of a collapsable stock, 16" barrel.

What I would like to do is buy a flat top upper receiver and switch it with the A2 upper I've got on my Bushmaster.  Having a carry handle with a HBAR isn't very practical for me.  A flat top would be much much better.

What should I expect to pay for a lower, stock, parts kit, upper reciever, barrel, etc?  If nothing else I'd just like to maybe buy a flat top upper to get me started.  Or would it just be easier to buy another complete AR rather than build?

For some reason a little short AR piques my interest at times.

Awhile back LAR (grizzly) was selling blem flattop uppers for $50ish stripped.  The blems were very minor finish imperfections and a great deal, you might email them to see if they have anymore.

Ameetec has some decent prices on lowers as well as www.carricozarmory.com   Build one, it's a good experience.

My last build a 20" A1 slickside "old school" style not quite complete yet but with some deals and trades I'll have about $350ish wrapped up in it.

You can get it built for between 500.00 and 600.00. The longer you look for the deals the more money you will save.

Hit it right on the head!

Just did what you are looking for with a Bushy super lite 16" BBL and had about $575 in it. Chould have done it cheaper with a Mega or Stag lower though.

Things not to skimp on: Get a RRA blot/carrier, get GOOD lower parts kits (LPK), to me the chrome BBL is optional, but I say get a Bushy BBL and be done with it. (look at eagle firearms or others in the industry forum). All the lowers are the same. Go with the old style CAR stock from Tapco for $29. Works just as good as any other for me.

If that's the same chinese POS that the other discount places are selling, you'd be better shelling out the extra dough for a CAV or RRA stock.

It is no worse than the orig. Colt that is on my A2sporter

I bought a complete kit that built into a <$600 rifle by the time it was done, including a mag and sling.  Lowers aren't that much different.  Just buy a forged one from a reputable company and you should be fine.  It's the parts you put in the lower that determine how good your rifle will shoot.

Of course I am talking all new parts and a new lower.  You can probably surf the EE and save a few $...  Complete kits are the best value in NEW parts by far most of the time.  For something as generic and straightforward as a simple CAR with a 16" barrel you would be even further ahead buying a kit.

The difference I've heard on the CAR stocks is mainly the buffer spring quality.  I bought a Model 1 Sales Fiberlite stock for $42 and it works fine however.  I just wish it hadn't took them so long to get it to me... :(

OH.........almost forgot. You will need to buy some tools as well! Need a punch set, vice block and barrel wrench. There are more tools to make the job quicker but those will work to start off with. Good luck with your build!!!!! And post pics!!!
