If I were to take a bull barrel and turn it down to an R4 profile or just wanted to turn it down to shave some weight, what is the minimum I can go and still stay safe?

DO you know if there is a drawing for an R4 profile that I can use as a guide?

Thanks,

For comparison, in Hatcher's Notebook, the author turned a Springfield barrel (.30-06) down to 1/8 inch wall thickness and fired regular and high pressure cartridges with no visible results.  He then turned it down to 1/16 inch and fired three regular service cartridges "perfectly."  Then he fired a "75,000 pound shot" that blew out a piece of the side.

we are talking about a .223 not a .30-06. I would guess the same thickness as a non-bull barrel. Just a guess.

Sounds like you did quite a bit of research -- I stand corrected!!
