any suggestions for a first timer on building a light ar15?

I'm very petitie and dont want something i can barely carry.   i could get the bushmaster lady, which is carbon fiber, so its lighter, and i think it is just smaller all around.   but i wanted to build it myself, and also dont want to pay $1000 upfront.

I would build it yourself, you will enjoy it, and you will learn alot about the rifle.
It is easy, and you don't need alot of tools.

There are several light weight choices out there, shop around, but I would go with a name brand
if you want a good rifle: Bushy, RRA, Stag, Mega, and DPMS, are all very good products.
I like Stag Lowers, and CMMG, Del-ton, and J&T for barrel's and kits.
Good Luck.

A couple suggestions

1-Buy a CAV Arms MkII lower and put a pencil barrel upper on it. Makes a very light rifle. Model 1 sales and I think Bushmaster sells some. That combo is my 14 year old daughter's favorite rifle.

2.  Do the same with a telestock (CAR) lower and a pencil barrel upper. Pretty close in weight to the Cav Arms and has an adjustable stock.

The basic M4 is a pretty light weapon, most people just load them up with lots of gadgets.  If you are looking for a lightweight AR, this is the one I built.  Eventually it was going to use a cut carry handle or ARMS 40L BUIS.

Here it is with a PS desert tiger stripe theme

thats pretty cool looking.   i do kinda want to go for simple (not CHEAP but simple)

how did u get it that color theme?

i know this sounds lame but i want it to be pink.   i have seen pink furniture, and i have read about the duracoat and stuff, but does that stuff stay on?  i wouldnt want to ruin my very expensive ar if that stuff chips or peels...

Most of the upper end finishes are quite good, and will hold up very well.  Here is another picture of the same weapon, and again, it has been colored via Photoshop to show what could be done to it.

I don't think having bright colors on your weapon is lame unless you plan on actually running raids with it.  If you run a SWAT raid, or a foot patrol in Iraq with a pink gun, I would wonder, but not for shooting at the range and having fun with.  Its going to be your weapon, who cares what other people think.

I’m not sure this is quite a “superlight” kit, but with the lightweight barrel option it might be close to what you want:
webcats.net/store/merchant.mv?Screen=PROD&Store_Code=J&Product_Code=C1C&Category_Code=K

I just ordered the above kit myself, but haven’t received it yet so I can’t say anything about its quality or actual weight.

If you’re interested in the above package, I’d definitely recommend you spend the extra $50 for the chrome plated barrel.  This is not to be confused with a chrome-moly barrel, which refers to the actual steel used in the barrel (my apologies if you already know this).

If you’ve got short arms, you also might want to get a 4 or 6 position telescoping stock.  It will let you adjust the stock for a shorter length than the traditional A-2 stock (which is fairly long).

Also, if you’ve got a strength problem, you can shorten the telescoping stock to let you bring the rifle’s center of gravity a bit closer to your body, making it easier to hold up (just keep in mind that while AR’s don’t have much recoil, they do have a little snap that could hit your face if you’re absolutely on top of the receiver).

The above kit is also available with green furniture.  (I kinda doubt they have pink.)  Also, I understand that the barrel is already attached to the upper.

Incidentally, I personally have trouble shooting really lightweight firearms accurately - especially offhand - since they just won’t seem to settle down.  For me, a little weight is good.

Good luck!!

My brother just bought a Colt 6520 upper.  16" pencil barrel.  It doesn't get much lighter.  A Carbon Fiber free float tube would be cool, though.

I've got a buddy who is looking to sell one, how much did your brother pay?
