I apologize if I'm dragging up something that's patently obvious or has been discussed in depth before, I was unable to find any other discussion on this. I'm looking at building a 20" AR, most likely with a flat top and a carry handle, nothing terribly fancy, A2 flashhider all on a doublestar lower that I picked up here in town. I'm looking to build a basic first time AR that would be good for generic plinking. I've been looking at different kits on different sights and I have seen chrome moly barrels, which I take to be regular steel, chrome lined barrels and stainless steel barrels. Aside from what appears to be a silvery metallic tone to the stainless steel barrels what's the real difference between them? If a stainless barrel is Good Thing is it possible to darken it to match the black colour that the rest of the rifle will have? Will having any of these barrel types make the rifle ineligible for use in a CMP event? |

From ArmaLite's website: "The chrome moly barrels offer excellent accuracy for a reasonable price. They require more cleaning and are less resistant to corrosion. Chrome-lined barrels have a layer of chrome plating applied to the bore and chamber, which increases the life expectancy and corrosion resistance, but they are more expensive and slightly less accurate from the chroming process. Stainless steel barrels are the most accurate, and have a moderate corrosion resistance." |
