Can anyone tell me which .22 upper or bolt conversion is the best?
I want to match my RRA High Power Rifle to get in some extra practice.
I saw the DPMS upper, but I do not know anything about the .22 bolt conversions.

Bushmaster makes a conversion upper which most are happy with. Carbon fiber/light barrel, but I think you are limited to a 10 rd mag so far. It does have a more appropriate twist rate (1:16?) than a regular old AR twist ( 1:7, 1:9, 1:12)barrel.

Ceiner is a good conversion kit, and hi caps are available. But you're shooting through the stock AR tube.

There are some others out there. The Colt factory units pop up once in a while, they can get pricey because of collectors. Surplus military conversion units are getting a little hard to find, but are rumored to be pretty good.

I think that I have heard that the DPMS upper is a perfectly fine unit too.

You might also post this question in the pistol caliber AR forum too. Those guys seem to know what they are talking about.

Sometimes.

In case you haven't figured it out, I do not have a .22 conversion yet.

So let this just be a BTT.

M261 kit is the way to go.  It is all steel and looks like the ciener but uses mag inserts that fit in a regular mag and still looks like a 5.56 with the unit installed.  I am sure the balistics aren't the same as a dedicated .22 upper but hey, were talking about plinking with .22 here.............. Not long range sniping.

Fulton Amrory has a DCM style .22LR upper which is perfect for DCM shooters and winter practice.

I just bought one of these myself. Nice kit. I don't know how well it will work past 75-100yards, but for shorter range plinking it should be fine.

I haven't actually had a chance to try it out yet (still waiting on parts to finish my AR), but others have posted very positive results. Plus, at $75 bucks they are a steal.

Unfortunately, I don't think this guy has any left at the moment:

I have a DPMS dedicated .22LR upper in M4 configuration. After discovering that it does not like lubed lead bullets, I switched to WalMart/Federal plated bullet bulk packs and have had zero issues since (well over 1000 rounds). Its pretty accurate, though I don't treat it to fancy-schmancy match ammo. They also offer a 20" service rifle upper if that discipline is your main interest. The mags hold 10 rounds, but we are expecting to see 30 round mags very soon.

I think this DPMS drop-on unit is a much cleaner solution than the Bushmaster (which is more fiddly to install and is made of carbon fiber instead of aluminum). Personally, I would avoid conversion units like the Ceiner unless you are just plinking, due to accuracy issues. To the best of my knowledge, the Ceiner is still the only company offering an M16 version though.

Hope this helps.

That's where I got mine.  When you get your rifle together you will love it.   I can shoot all day and not go broke.  I mean all day 6AM to 6PM and have a blast and I still look like a man with a gun that has real AR15 twenty round mags and not those weenie ciener skinny ones.  If it wasn't for the M261 I would have to go with a DPMS M4 style .22 upper but you can't turn that $400 upper back to 5.56 like you can with the M261.  Did I mention I love my M261?

I have DPMS unit it works great no problems at all with jamming or missfires. I have used it all my AR's with twist rates from 1 in 12 to 1in 7 and  including my AR 7 1/2 pistol. Unit was $129.95 worth every cent i paid for it.

If you can find an Air Force version of the .22 conversion unit, I'd recommend it over any of the others as a practice unit, if for no other reason than that it's the only one I know of that holds the bolt back after the last round, so you can practice your mag changes in timed fire exercises

It's easy to recognize. The mags are dups of the standard 30 round GI, except they're made  of white plastic. I keep threatening to paint the darn things black, but after nearly 20 yeears haven't gotten around to it yet

Also, the "barrel" in front of the chamber has shallow rifling, so the bullet is already somewhat spinning when it hits the main rifling in the barrel, which I think helps the accuracy somewhat. No, it won't match the accuracy of a full bore heavy barrelled .22 upper assy, but  the unit I have does beat the accuracy of the M261 I acquired about the same time some years back. After several haundred rounds of comparison firing, I sold off the M261 and kept the AF unit.

If you do decide on an insert type unit, see if you can locate one of these types at a decent price. It's a good'un

i was out shooting my Ceiner conversion in my m4 today as a mater of fact. i can say this, it is utterly reliable. having shot it in both of my ar15s never a bobble. i was shooting standing up using a left barricade stance and got 1" at 25 yds with cheap blaser ammo. and yes the mags look cheesey i would like to find a junk 30rd mag that i could cut down and spot weld to my mag. anybody sees one let me know. tim
