Well my plan is to just drill my FH and 'dimple' the barrel, insert pin etc... I have also heard on the 'offset' method, which brings me to my questions, one, which is preferres and why? Two, whats the best way to drill the offset hole? I have a drill press, so thats not a problem, I just foresee difficulty in drilling a hole on the rounded part of the FH.
Thanks

You are right.  You will be very lucky if you can start a drill bit on the arc of a FH like that.  I'd make a flat spot with an end mill, then drill from there or I'd more likely just keep going with the end mill.

The offset method doesn't seem to gain you anything.  All the permament FH installs that I have done have been along the bore centerline, perpedicular to the axis of the bore.

One note I found out.  Vortex FHs are very hard, all the way through.  I had to use a mill/end mill to make the hole needed to install the setscrew I used for permenent attachment.

Thanks Mongo, I'll probably just go with my original plan then.

Vortex FHs are very hard, all the way through.

crap, just ordered one from Grant yesterday....Oh well, everything I do, I always figure out the hardest damn way to do it!

ETA, so you used a set screw? How hard was it to tap a vortex? Do you think it was worth it, or would a pin be just as well?
Thanks again

Good luck.  Use new, sharp drill bits - carbide or cobalt may be better choices, as they are intended for harder materials.  I tried to center punch the Vortex to get a good starting point for the drill bit and the Vortex laughed at the center punch, which now had a flat point.  That is when I realized it was mill time.

Thanks for the advice...I'll get 'er figured out ...I have some experience with this sort of thing, except instead of a vortex, it was a broken bolt, with a broken 'easy out'  stuck in the head of my '53 ford went though a few titanium amd cobalt bits that day...
