Is there some rule of thumb or other method to end up with a notch in the tightening ring lining up with the gas tube opening in the upper receiver.  I usually end up a little short in the clockwise rotation of being able to align, and don't want to back it off to the next notch....

sometime you really have to torque the nut on there, i have installed barrels before that didnt require but around 30 foot pounds, others that required 60.... the best thing to do is set your torque wrench to the max (75), and line up the gas tube groove with the upper and dont go past 75 foot pounds or you may damage the receiver....

Tighten to 30 Ft. Lbs. if the gas tube hole is not lined up then tighten a little more until it is lined up.   NEVER back of the nut to get the hole lined up.

And when you reach 80 and it's still not lined up, tighten it up some more.  It happens.  Use the proper lube on the threads and properly support the receiver and receiver damage should not occur.

COLT spec.s: Tighten to 35 foot pounds, then tighten untill gas tube allighns (if it isn't allready!), NOT TO EXEED 80lbs.ft.

Not always possible.  You will have builds that just won't fall into that range.

You can also loosen a little and go back up.  Do this several times, you are smoothing the threads.  It will usually work right on up to alignment without excessive torque.  But you do what you need to do.

+1.  My carbine took 86 ft-lbs. to line up, but it works perfectly.

Rule of thumb?  Once you get up to 30 ft-lb, remove the torque wrench, replace it with a long breaker bar.  After 30 you don't need (or want) to know the torque.  Just line it up.
