Can an action block be used to R & R a flash supressor?  Or is that asking for trouble and barrel vice blocks are required?

Barrel trying to twist with the upper held solid... Don't use an action block... I use nothing more than a vise, a piece of leather wrapped around the barrel to protect it from the vise jaws and an armorers wrench to replace muzzle devices...

For flash suppressor work use barrel vise blocks.

OK.  Thanks.  I think I like the cost/benefit ratio of the vise/leather option.

I use some hardwood blocks with a 'U' shaped channel cut in them....

I am kinda wondering how you cut a "U" shaped groove.  I understand how to get a "V"!

A router?  Tablesaw and a round wood file?  Many ways.

Hmmm.  Unfortunately my toolbox contains things like wrenches, sockets and dial gauges. Have to consult with my carpenter type brother-in law.

Everytime you go to the hardware store buy something new even if it is only $10.  One day you will have stuff you forgot about.

Oh.  I think I told my wife the same thing but it was the GUN SHOP!

Did I mention that sawdust makes me sneeze?

I used my action block to take mine off, it wasnt too hard but i would suggest a barrel vise over a action block because the barrel may tighten or loosen inside of the receiver, just anough to misallign the gas tube and mess it up. MY 2 CENTS< GET A BARREL VISE.

I may have to talk to my father-in-law about some hardwood blocks.

He does all the carpentry work. I like the mechanical stuff.

He loves it when people give him litte projects that he can knock out in a few minutes.

**EDIT**

I just realized my bench vise has pipe jaws on the bottom of it. (just flip the head) Looks like it's the "wrap in leather" route for me next time.

I made a trick set of aluminum barrel blocks for .750 and 1" diameter barrels at work a few years back. Pretty easy to do with a vertical mill.

Drill a hole through a block of wood, then cut the block in two down the length of the drilled hole.  voila. (my first set of barrel blocks, now I have some aluminum ones as well)

I am dazzled by the simplity.  That I can handle with the drill press and  chopsaw.
