I purchased a really nice A1, 3 prong upper off the EE, and got a Stag lower to go with it.

I have used Norrel's to finish an AK, so I kind of know what I'm doing with that.

I was thinking of buying the Colt gray from Norrel, and seeing if I can match up the color a little better. Do I need to take all of the parts out of the lower? Do the original guns have gray external parts such as the mag release, bolt release buttons?

If i'm going to do it, I'd like to get as close as possible to the original. (Using a modern lower!)

Any tips would be appreciated.

All parts were the Colt grayish color if I remember right.  You can pull parts off if you want, but you certainly don't have to.  I would pull the FCG, but leave the rest in.  Most people do more damage (chips, scratches) putting them back in, and if sprayed correctly, you won't be able to see a difference.

Actually I bought the the last quart of the grey Norrel's  from Ekie / Mike here on the EE. Sorry about that but once I get it and try it out I will let you know how it looks. The pictures I have seen on some of the other threads it is dead on.
