I have wanted to build a 16" collapseable stock AR-15 for a long time. I don't know what the difference is between a Car , M4 etc.. Can anyone school me on all the different models?  Edwin |

CAR-15s have thinner handguards and Fiberite or aluminum buttstocks, with 2 or three positions. They should have A1 or A2 sights with a carry handle. The "CAR-15" designation can cover any of the 16" or shorter bbl ARs from 1965 to the early 90s, military or civilian. Depending on who you're talking to, these are also called XM177, SP1 Carbine, Commando, Colt 608, and so on. M4s (The newer military model) has thicker handguards, a sturdier 4 position (or more) buttstock, and most models have flattop uppers with detachable carry sights. Barrels are lightweight with a cut in front of the FSB to attach an M203 grenade launcher ("the M4 profile"), and are 14.5 inches long. The M4 is available in semi and burst fire, the M4A1 is is semi and full auto, IIRC. All true M4s are military, and produced after the Machine Gun ban, so it is illegal to build them. From what I've seen, the CAR foregrips are similar to those found on the old XM-177 'shorty' rifle of the Vietnam war era. Their diameter is smaller than the M4 grips and they have a very slight contour from back to front. M4 grips are wider in diamater and have little or no contour, resembling a true geometric cylinder.
