Which would be better for a dissipator setup, and why?

1. Carbine Length gas system.
2. Mid Length gas system.
3. Full rifle barrel cut and recrowned to 16"

I don't care if I have to lose the FSB and run a tube handguard with a flip front sight.

I just got the M4gery built, now it's time for receiver #2.

I want a dizzy REAL BAD. I just don't know what setup is going to be the best for me.

I thought dissipators were rifle length gas system with rifle handguards?

yes, but most of the barrels used seem to be carbine barrels with an extra FSB pinned on.

I've been checking out the dissy's as well. Most are carbine length gas systems.  I've seen a few 20" cut downs on the EE. One of which I might get. Have yet to see a mid-length.  I'm a noob, so I don't know the pros and cons. I'm sure someone here can enlighten us.

In either case I dont think you will have a performance issue, the sight picture is the true "advantage" of the dissapator set up. My .02

Isn't the recoil impulse on the rifle length another plus for the dissy?

Ok, if I understand this right I can take a 20" barrel, and have it shortened and threaded for a dissipator and not suffer any reliability issues due to the location of the gas port.

I am hoping so, because that is the plan. I can pickup a barrel and send it to ADCO to be refinished.

By the time January is over my wife may kill me. I am starting to have more $$ in guns then she does in jewelry.

iirc the gas port has to be opened up a bit .

Anyone know what size the port needs to be?

IMO, the midlength gas system will work the best if you are going to buy one. This has been discussed quite a bit. Try a search for "dissy".

So who on this forum has actually cut down a 20" to 16" and gotten it to run?

No, because the dissipator uses a carbine (or midlength) gas system under the handguards. The front sight is just a front sight.

Either with the a shortened 20" barrel, or a carbine gas system, or mid-length gas system, you are still using a 16" barrel, and thus, bullet velocity will still be that of a 16" barrel, which is about 150-200 FPS less than a 20" barrel.  I am also looking at a dissy and decided to use a barrel with the carbine gas system, because it is tried and true.

Here.

Didn't do anything to the gas port.  I did have a problem at first and cut 1&1/2 coils off the buffer spring but now that I think back I think the culprit was a brand new, too tight McFarland gas ring.
