Seen these mentioned a few times.  What is the purpose and when would you use one in an AR?

They help with cycling by slowing it a bit. They are used in collapsible stocks.

Do they help in the A1/A2 stocks?

To tailor the cyclic rate when full auto with the CAR length tube and short barrel.  For semi auto, it is not needed.  Can be used though to duplicate weight of std rifle buffer in a CAR tube if you use the "9mm" buffer.

Not only not needed, but very dangerous... will cause your bolt carrier to beat on your lower receiver.
