I am fixing to build a new AR and am not sure what components to get. I want a 20" flat top with weaver gas block and a rail forend. Not exactly a SPR but similar. I've just about settled on a SS HBAR 1-8" type barrel w/threaded muzzle. I'm doing this basically for the heck of it so I want to keep the $$ down. From the looking I've done it looks like I may be better off buying a complete RRA upper w/ A2 handguards and then changing out the forend with whatever I decide to go with. Before I order it though I'm looking for input on the barrel. Are RRA (Wilson) barrels a good buy or is there another that is a better deal? Also what about rate of twist? I mostly shoot 55g FMJ but also a little 69g match and 64g PP. Also for the forend, I want a rail but don't want to drop the $$ for a DD or that end of the spectrum. I was considering the Armalite Alostyr fiber handguards (they look like they would be light) but I can't find any opinions on them. What about the FIRSH or Yankee Hill? I don't want anything too heavy. Sorry for all the questions, just kind of confused by all the options. Thanks |

Have you looked at the Oly SUM barrel? You would be hard priced to find a better barrel even for more money. The prices aren't bad at all, and are often not that much more than a standard barrel from other companies, sometimes even less. I think you should be able to get a 1/8 20" SUM barrel for about $200. The FIRSH works well, but there are plenty of people who will bad mouth it for a variety of reasons. Usually the reasons are, 1) It is Oly, so it doesn't have the cool factor. 2) It is wider than some other railed ends. 3) It is heavier than many other railed ends. I shot plenty of SUM barrels, and they are all more accurate than I am. I've used the FIRSH on a patrol carbine, and while it was heavier than some other systems, it took a hell of a beating without any problems. The width wasn't an issue for me, but I can see where it might be for some people. The 20" FIRSH is something I've only used a little, but it has been suitable for what the shooter wanted on that project. I currently run with 2 piece YHM railed handguards, and have found them to be quite good. I have not used the free floating one pice YHM version, but I can only expect that it would also be an outstanding product. There are plenty of people here using them. |
