just got a RRA lower with a ??? manuf 7.5 pistol upper in .223, having trouble with the bushmaster pistol buffer assembly, even tried one from the carbon 15 type and no go , the spring starts out about 12 inches in length and then after a few single shots ( the bolt will not fully engage, have to hit the fwd assist to go into battery ), then after about 10 shots the spring has compressed to about 8 inches, and now does not seem like it has enough tension ...??? The only way  this will work is to use the regular tube like off of a collapsable stock, but with out the stock, this has worked for trial purposes only as I do not intend to do a SBR ( testing purp only )

questions : what do you guys think am I using the wrong type buffer assembly ???
would the BATF consider this a violation to use a modified non collapsable stock tube only, unless I made some provision to fill in the hole under the collapse stock so not to accept a butt stock

According to Mary Jane Humphrey of the Louisville KY ATFE, who checked with Washington on my behalf, it is perfectly OK to use a carbine length buffer tube (no mods necessary) so long as you never attach the butt stock part while it is wearing a shorter than 16 inch barrel.  Since it is perfectly OK to turn a pistol into a rifle and back again (so long as you have the stock on only with a 16 inch or longer barrel) it would be OK to even have the stock part that attaches so long as you have a rifle upper to use with the butt stock should you attach it.

You know ... slapping a carbine tube on that pistol is as boarderline as you can get in terms of being legal.  After all, that tube IS from a CARBINE stock, originally NOT designed for a pistol.  I've already asked this too and the suggestion was to stick w/ a pistol buffer.

Try the one from model1sales.com instead.

Well, I don't know what the Bushy pistol buffer looks like..... but a stronger spring sounds like it would solve the issue.

If it is anything like the Model 1 buffer spring......a Wolff spring will do nicely.

Well, it doesn't list any for the AR pistol buffer.

Short story..... someone commented that the recoil spring looked like a 1911 recoil spring.  After doing some measuring, they seemed to "match".  Problem is, the standard 1911 recoil spring is too short for use as an AR recoil spring.  So, "we" ordered the 1911 long slide recoil spring.  The spring is REALLY long, and will need to be trimmed/fitted.

Yes, I have it in writing in the form of an e-mail so that carries exactly zero legal weight.  Still, it is enough for me as well as I have multiple witnesses at the C3 dealer I frequent and they were proxy to every bit of the correspondence and know Ms. Humphrey very well.
Remember, getting it in writing, even on ATFE letterhead means nothing to anyone but the person the letter is addressed to.  I have written the ATFE multiple times on many subjects over the last three years addressed to every division you can think of and I have gotten exactly ZERO replies.  At least Ms. Humphrey answers my questions and will research the answers.  She does not act like a know-it-all and if she does not know something for a fact, she will contact those who do.  This is what happened with several items she has researched for me.  Her word might not be good enough for some, but to those who know her if she says it, you can take it to the bank.
