I just got a mod4 16" upper from CMMG that is supposed to have a 1:7 bbl. I looked at the bottom of the barrel and it says DPMS 5.56 1-9. Anyone else have this?

That's odd, have you contacted CMMG about this? I'm going to order an upper from them tomorrow and would like to know about this. Keep us posted. I thought they weren't using DPMS barrels any more and were, as CMMG put it, rolling their own. I want an upper that has the barrel they say it has. There has to be good explantion for this, at least I hope so.

Anybody with a CMMG upper? What does yours say? I think I'm probably happier with the 1:9 twist. It seems by most of what I read it has a better overall average of what bullets it can stabilize. Just curious how if I got the wrong barrel by mistake or if they just ran out of the 1:7

Sounds like a mistake.  Contact CMMG and I'm sure they will make it right.

I have an older CMMG barrel marked DPMS 1 - 7, and it is tits.  FYI, CMMG contracted DPMS to make a special run of barrels for them before they started making their own.  These DPMS barrels are top notch - chrome lined, 4150 steel.  They were only available through CMMG.

Contact CMMG.  YOU WANT the 1:7.  It will do ANYTHING a 1:9 will do, plus more.

I'm not even sure this is chrome lined. How do you tell the difference between chrome moly and chrome lined? Are they both silver in color? This appears to have a chrome carrier instead of the black one in the pic on their site. I'm gonna call em today I guess.

I  have one  that marked DPMS  1/7  223, their seem to be alot of confused about how these barrels are marked.

You can look at  the ammo oracle http://www.ammo-oracle.com/body.htm  and  http://groups.msn.com/TheMarylandAR15shootersSite/tipstricks.msnw

Both say DPMS  marked their barrels at one time 223,but their chamber is actually 556.

The new barrels seem to  be  marked correctly.

That being said, I have  used 223/556  and it has cycled perfectly, really  pleased with my CMMG/DPMS upper.

well I didnt want to sound like I was being too negetive. It was no big deal... they sell both models and just sent the wrong one. He told me to hang on to the other and he would overnight me the correct one and send return ship money! Pretty good customer service I think. I would have just kept this one, but I want chrome lined bbl.

I have a CMMG MOD4 upper and the bottom of the barrel is marked:

CMMG MPC 5.56 NATO 1/7

BTW my upper doesn't like the WOLF Polymer at all.  Have you tried it and if so what was your experience?

Thanks.

Uh oh, I'm hoping my CMMG upper I'm going to order today eats anything.

Maybe I just got a bad lot of Wolf because my Armalite doesn't like it either.  Failures to feed and casings stuck in chamber.  Wish I could use it.  Let me know how it works out with your new upper.

I have the same upper, marked as yours, fortunately it has NEVER been subjected to Wolf ammo. It has performed flawlessly without malfunction w/:
Federal Gold Medal 69 & 77 SMKs,
XM-193,
Q3131A,
Winchester 64grn. PP and PP+,
Black Hills (bluebox) 69 & 77 SMKs,
S&B 55grn.,
Olympic 62grn. SS-109,
and reloads of my own making in 64grn PP, Nosler 77grn. OTMs, and Sierra 77grn. SMKs.

I'd suggest ya save that smelly stuff for AKs, no sense buying a great upper only to feed it sub-par ammunition.

YMMV,
Mike

The only other ammo I've used in either rifle has been XM-193 and both run like scaulded dogs (thats good).  Many, many people swear by the new Wolf and it is considerably cheaper, probably 2/3s the cost of XM-193.  Some people report the exact same problems I have had.  Either some rifles won't eat it or it's a bit hit or miss quality wise.  The fact that it has problems it both my rifles (one Armalite and one CMMG) suggests a bad lot to me.

Are you using the same mags on both rifles? Maybe it is a mag problem.

Yes.  Also loaded same mags with both types of rounds.  Run great with XM-193 and like shit with the Wolf.  Also, mags wouldn't explain stuck rounds in chambers.  Had the extractor rip a chunk out of the soft steel case on the Wolfs.  The Wolf is lightly loaded and often won't cycle properly in either gun.  One's got a 14.5 barrel the other a 16.  Should be plenty of gas pressure if the loads aren't wimps.  Unfortunately I have 400+ more rounds of this crap.

YMMV.

Ammo SNOB!!!!!

WOLF ROCKS!!!!

Seriously... quit telling everyone not to shoot it.  It IS NOT dangerous, nor does it damage a gun.

So if you rifle shoots it well, great!  Have fun.  If it wont run on Wolf, feed it premium.  Wolf is great plinking ammo.

I didn't tell anyone not to shoot it, that is was dangerous or that it damages rifles. I simply stated what most folks know, "ya get what ya pay for"!
