As I've been adding to my collection of AR tools I've been using cheap alternatives to commercial tools when there seems to be no great loss in not spending cash on tools that can go towards components.  I've been using a pair of wooden blocks that I made as a vise insert.  So are they really worth the $15. Sorry if this is a noob question but I didn't get a return on my search. TIA

Theyre worth it to me. Good for putting on flash hiders and brakes. I wouldnt think wood could let you torque the vice enough to keep the barrel from spinning when tightening a flash hider.

I laminated some scraps up and routed a grove in them. And yes it does take a fair amount of force. I typically wrap the barrel with a cloth and clamp the crap out of  it.

I use wooden blocks(oak) also with channels cut into each side and  some 5/8" heater hose split around the barrel then put it into the blocks and then the vise. Works great. Then I finnish up in the receiver vise to torque the barrel. Improvise, adapt, overcome.
