What is the cheapest anyone could build a correct pattern M4gery for? By correct I mean T-numbered flat top upper, M4 feed ramps and a chrome lined 14.5 inch barrel with perm attached WHATEVER to get you out to 16 inches?

You should probably start by pricing CMMG and LMT uppers to get what you're looking for.  I know CMMG has dremel'd feed ramps, which may not be exactly what you're looking for.

Dremeling feedramps is actually the better way to do it. Some barrel extensions don't line up with the ramps in the upper leaving sharp edges sticking out. My roomate sent an SPR upper off to Gem tech to get one of their bilock flash suppresors put on and they put M4 feedramps into is upper as a here ya go kinda thing. Very cool I thought.  I checked out the CMMG website. Very nice and it gives me some place to start.

That is a fair point about the feed ramps; that also means you can get any upper and do your own ramps if you're so inclined.  I have a CMMG upper and am totally happy with it.   LMT is as good (if not better??), but considerably more expensive.  The 1:7 twist is probably the most difficult feature to find.  4150 bbl steel is another harder-to-find feature (Bushy, LMT, CMMG, others?).  The 14.5 inch M4 bbl and vortex/phantom is also pretty common (or not to expensive to get done).

Ya know this is where my set up will be one off. I still do not agree with a 1 in 7 twist barrel. 1 in 9 will be what I will build my rifles in. 1 in 8 for an SPR but 90% of all ammo run through an M4gery will be 55 grain ball ammo and a 1 in 9 is IMHO the way to go.

If youy are happy with a 1:9 barrel, but want the M4 feedramps, Model 1 Sales will sell their M4 kit with the correct cuts.  You have to ask for them.  It is a $25 option.  Sure, the feedramp cuts may not be neccessary, but I wanted them because they are "correct" for the real M4.

I need an explanation of how to post a picture.  I have one on my computer, but it seems as I can only post an image that resides on the web?  To insert a picture, I am prompted for the picture's URL.

go to photobucket.com and open your self a free account. upload the image to your new photobucket account and once that is done place the URL into the pop window once promted. If you have any trouble ask and I will walk you through it. Once you do it photobucket seems very good about leaving the images up.

WOW that is impresive. Yeah model 1 sales is a role of the dice and after reading all the horror stories.

The use of the Bushmaster barrel is a good thing to.

$546.96 is pretty damn good in my book.

Sorry if this is obvious, but what lower receiver and from where?  I'm an AK guy so maybe it is obvious.  Greetings from central-Missouri too!

meyerse,

Figure another $100 for a lower receiver, there are plenty of companies making them in that price range. (Mega, Stag, Ametec, RRA, Oly, Stinger etc)

Meyerse,
Check with CMMG in Fayette
DPMS forged for 105 + tax.

Or may others available too.
All those advertised under a hundred are fine but then you have shipping and transfer fee's
Usually 20-35 dollars + % depending on who and where.
I would just buy DPMS from Jeff and John for less money.

AFSOC, those are great numbers. That's about $100 less than my estimates. Where is the best place to pick up a Bushmaster barrel? Sorry if that has been asked a ton of times.

$1306.15????? I thought part of the "building your own" idea, was to be able to do it for less than the cost of a rifle off the shelf at the dealer..... correct me if I'm wrong, but I have been seeing LE6920 rifles all over the net and in the EE for much less.... now I know there is a sense of pride in building your own rifle, but shouldnt it cost less than a factory gun...??
11/9/2004 12:35:52 PM EDT

depends on how you want it. Thats the point of building your own, build it how YOU want it, not how the manufacturer wants it.

I got them from Bushmaster but they are running way behind now.....
Hunt around you can find them the one I chose was the patrolmans carbine barrel.
I am currently awaiting the arrival of a barrel from Bushy that was ordered in september....
I ordered two and got one, just prior to the 13th I ordered one and got it within a week.
Speaking of which I need to Call Bushy tomorrow to find out a status on that barrel!

You have to realize that many "little" things are more costly than the rifle itself.
For example, I inlcuded all the tools I bought as it was my first build.
A non-standard front handguard adds cost.
So does a BUIS.
And an optic mount. And optic.
And a non-standard sling loop at the base of the buffer tube.
3 Magpul rail covers add $40

I was almost sorry I put together a spreadsheet.  I hope my wife never sees it.
She doesn't mind me buying guns and parts, but if you stop to add it up, it looks kinda rough.
But, if you remove all tool costs, it is a bit more reasonable.

I too used Excel to budget my project.

Total cost was $640 (includes shipping and FFL fee) for a 24" Bushmaster Target Rifle that I built.

I too recommend Bushmaster. Their barrel was high quality.
