| just a quick question, is the buffer hole on the lower suppose to be slightly off center, to the left? |
|
I think it's off center in relation to the towr, but I'm not sure, here's a couple of pics: http://members.cox.net/badtaiwanese69/images/ar_receiver.JPG http://members.cox.net/badtaiwanese69/images/ar_receiver_2.JPG I bought it off of www.hicapmagparts.com |

I would measure each side, and call the manufacturer to see if it's in spec before doing any machining on it. If it's out of spec, they'll replace it, but not if there's any machining done to it I'm sure. Sometimes you'll see a slight offset in the machining of finished receivers, it comes from the forgings being slightly wider or narrower than others (but still within normal tolerances). |

Darkest, I maybe wrong here (please chime in if you know for sure) but I do not think that you can built a new "Assault weapon" as described per SB23 in CA. I believe this applies to 80% guns as well. Unless of course you fix the mag capacity or make the reciever incapable of accepting a pistol grip (which may be what you are planning to do). I would definitely research this up if I were you to avoid breaking the law. |
Cnorton's right. Also unless Darkest2000's building a bolt or pump action AR, or for LE. Either way need a boat load of paperwork. |

Dark... I looked at your pictures.... the buffer hole looks OK.... should be fine to proceed. as Lester mentioned in his post... Sometimes you'll see a slight offset in the machining of finished receivers, it comes from the forgings being slightly wider or narrower than others (but still within normal tolerances). I have run into this issue on NOC CAST receivers...but once we matted the upper to the lower.. it proved to be a non-issue. |

Dark... you guys may want to check this link out... it states that if you use a 22LR kit in a AR15 would exempt it from SB23..??? nramemberscouncils.com/CAL-DOJregs2.shtml "Converting firearms to fire rimfire cartridges, instead of centerfire, is a legal alternative to registering a firearm under SB-23. The example discussed was that of a Bushmaster XM15 with the designation of ".223 caliber" on the lower receiver. DOJ Staff admitted that function of the firearm is what determines the necessity of registration, not the labeling or name. Thus, an "AR-15 type" firearm that has been converted to .22 long rifle (with a conversion kit) would "exempt it completely" from SB-23 and the "Assault Weapon" designation. " |

Agree with 9mm. The hole isn't off much, if it is at all. It may just be one side of the tower thicker than the other, but in any case it should be fine. As long as the buffer tube is installed straight, the carrier should clear without a problem. I have one that I drilled off center by much more than that, and it works fine, the carrier doesn't get stuck in the buffer tube. Just make sure you cut your buffer tube threads straight and perpendicular to the rear of the tower. |

Thanks for all the response. I have no intention of building an illegal firearm, the CA laws are so confusing. I will look into it more. Would it be legal to build a fixed mag or a non pistol grip receiver? if I somehow make it so that the magazine catch requires a tool to move, then it should be ok? |
