Ok I got a fixed car stock and am wondering do you HAVE to have a telescoping stock wrench or can I use something else?

Thanks

You dont HAVE to have the wrench, but they are only a couple of bucks and will keep you from stripping/scratching stuff.  I tried it without first, then I bought a wrench.

It is really easy to scratch the nut, even with the spanner wrench.  You can get them for about $6 or less and they are very handy.

+1 for the telestock wrench. I tried using a regular spanner wrench at first and I dinged my tube. Bushmaster sells them for $5.95.

Look at your locking ring and be sure to get the right wrench.

The newer locking rings ("castle nuts") have 4 notches - at 9, 12, 3 and 6 o'clock positions.  The $6 telestock wrench from BM works only on these style rings.

Older locking rings have a single hole instead of notches (some may have both?).  The pin on a spanner wrench hooks into the hole.  If you have the hole-type, DPMS sells a CAR spanner wrench for $5 with free delivery.  Go to dpmsinc.com and search for 'wrench'.  Or get the multitool for $34 delivered.

Editted to correct description of castle nut.

You have to determine if you have a Castle nut (4 rectangular notches on the inside edge) or a CAR nut ( circular indents in the middle of the nut).  The type of nut determines the type of wrench you need.  I would guess you want the CAR spanner wrench but I don't know for sure.  If you post a picture, we can help you.
