If I cut my DPMS barrel from 20" to 18,5" will it still work, or do I have to open the gass vent in the barrrel, and if so, to what sice

This months issue of Shotgun News has a great "how to" article on cutting down barrels and recrowning them with houshold items. Seems very easy, I'd pick up the issue. It is the "treasury issue". I am considering a cut-down myself.

Guys, remember if you're cutting down a chrome-lined barrel you have to be very careful about the chrome lining flaking and really screwing with your accruacy - unless you really  know how you cut them down.

SS, of course, is much easier to deal with....

Pete of Legal Transfers said the chrome lining will peel off if you cut chrome-lined barrels.

I've cut many chrome lined barrels on AK's, AR's and FAL's, as have many others on this board.  I've never seen nor heard of the chrome lining 'flaking' off.  This isn't like the chrome plating on a car bumper.

the whole chrome flaking myth has been disproven to my and my FALs satisfaction.

Are DPMS barrels chrome lined?
I'm thinking about the same myself, and wondering about if I have to open opp the gass vent. I have a SS DPMS.

I have never seen a chrome lined dpms, and never a chrome lined ss of any sort.

You shouldn't need to open the gas port  when cutting down to 18".
