Hey!

On the standard AR (.223) semi-auto hammer (not match, two-stage, burst, etc.) the claw portion of the hammer has no particular function in the overall operation of the trigger group. True or False? If your answer is false, why?

False - if'n you're talking about the hook that the disconnector grabs.

I'm guessing he means the large hook at the top, not the notch halfway up that the disconnector engages.  In that case, True.  I generally cut them off to reduce lock time.

TRUE it serves no purpose, well that isnt excatly true, I have known ppl cut them off and make a lighter Hammer, what happens is the surplus mil-spec primers are harder to ignite, so the extra weight of a hammer helps, and I have seen ppl cut it off and have trouble igniting harder primers.

Bingo.  The "claw portion" is there for additional mass that is needed to ensure proper engagement of any primer that might come your way.

Be careful guys.  Most things on a rifle like this do serve a purpose.

Probably a stupid question on my part or I'm thinking of the wrong thing but isn't the claw on the back of the hammer used to catch on the FA sear in a select fire weapon? Or is it the overall rear profile you're refering to?

UHH, the tail section of the hammer is where the lug goes on the M16 hammer. On some hammers, you can see where the lug was removed to make the hammer an AR legal hammer.

In the event of an AR-15, the tail really serves no useful function, other than mass.

Hey Fizassist!

You hit the nail on the head! My concern was with the reduction in overall weight of the trigger in relation to any spring adjustment/replacement (hammer). Once a part in a group is modified it will affect the other parts in the group.

Thanks to all for the feedback!

You are much too narrow minded.  "True" and "False" are symptoms of having an excessively absolutist view of the universe.

The real question is, which answer makes you more happy?  Which answer corresponds more closely with your own experience?  You need to free your mind from the artificial constraints of true-false dichotomies.  Ask yourself this: Does the claw portion of the hammer have a purpose to you?  Why is a semi-auto trigger group important?  Does "function" or "lack of function" have a deeper meaning from your childhood?

The AR that matters is the AR of your mind.  When you realize this, you will be on one of the many paths of enlightenment.

Holy Shit Batman!!!!

I feel like I need to see a psychotherapist...Have I missed something of importance? What will the remainder of my life be? When I came to the fork in the road, should I have taken the path to the right instead of the left? I think I have finally seen the light! I'm selling all my worldly goods and moving to a Tibetan monastery in Catmandu! There I will meditate on the question of the ages...Do you actually need the "claw" portion of the standard AR hammer for proper functioning?

Thank You Carbine_Man for the path to enlightenment!!!

Find peace and contentment, my son.  And when in doubt, empty the magazine.  C_M

Hey, that one pic explains all.  Can we see it from the other side?
I would like to save it without the word 'Colt' visible.

I cut the tail off every time. The tail serves no purpose; it's not present on the military hammer.

Huh?  It's not only present, it's also got an extra little tit on it to catch on the auto sear.  At least every military hammer I ever saw had it

Exactly....that "tit" is what catches on the FA sear. It's not only there, it's required for FA operation.

The more complicated ya mke the plumbing, the easier it is to stop the drain! Leave the tail alone!
