Here is the situation and setup. I've got a DPMS lower and a Model 1 sales kit (5.56 chrome bore, chamber and bolt carrier) My question is what should be done to prep the parts for the build. Specifically the chrome bolt carrier assembly. http://www.model1sales.com/images/boltas.gif Should I disassemble the carrier to clean and lightly lubricate? Prep work in progress: Ordered the pin punches, pivot pin tool and green followers. Just incase there is sand or grit, I plan to do a quick CLR clean on the barrel. The lower parts have been wiped clean, degreased and are soaking in CLR right now. Reading the Air force manual and AR15 guild. Washed and cleaned my GI issued 20 round mags. Any other prep work you can think of? I found this article on smoothing out the trigger pull. Good idea???? How-To Remove a Trigger's Grittiness To remove the grittiness you must polish the trigger pin. First it is recommended you download the Unit Maintenance Manual (the -23&P) and read up on how to remove the trigger assembly. It is also recommended you make two 'slave' pins to make disassembly/assembly MUCH easier. Directions on how to make the slave pins are in the back of the Maintenance manual. Remove the trigger pin. Polish the middle of the pin with ‘000’ steel wool. Polish it enough to smoothen it out – do not remove all the finish. Easiest way to polish evenly is to put the end of the pin in a drill to spin it and apply the steel wool to the spinning pin (CAREFULLY!). Replace the trigger pin. Thanks to LTC Santose for this recomendation. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Also, you might want to 'stone' the trigger and hammer surfaces that meet. You can use a fine honing stone to smoothen the contact surfaces. Disassemble the lower per the -23 and light run the stone over the surfaces (the shiny ones) once or twice to remove any machining marks. This is not recommended for M16 parts. WARNING: if you stone too much you can wear through the hardened surface and ruin your internal parts (requiring replacement). The wear is not immediately apparent, and can take 200 rounds or so to show up. This website and those involved with it do not and can not take resposibility for you screwing up your own parts. Do this at your own risk. Thanks to Tweak for this recomendation. |
